Laurel Ryan's research interests include transatlantic and transnational literary relationships, with a particular focus on Canadian literary history and historiography. She is the author of “Constructing ‘Home': Eros, Thanatos, and Migration in the Novels of Anita Rau Badami” in the South Asian Review 29.1 (2008), a biography of Wayson Choy for the Literary Encyclopedia (2012), and numerous conference papers on Canadian and transnational literary subjects.

Her current projects include a creative and critical collaboration on the Clotilda , the last slave ship to enter the United States; an article on early Canadian literary perceptions of the Middle East; a book project, Cultural Memory and Nation-Making: Medievalism in Early Canada , which will examine the function of cultural memory in the nationalizing (and anti-nationalizing) discourses leading up to World War I; and a digital archive and database project of over one thousand annotated works of Canadian medievalism.
