Study in the field of English offers a general humanistic education as well as training in communication and analytical skills that are essential in most careers. An education in English enables students to read closely and critically, to think analytically, to write and communicate, to weigh values, and to understand different peoples and cultures. A B.A. in English can lead to careers in public relations, publishing, radio, theater, and library science.

For more information regarding careers for English majors, please see "What Can I Do with This Major?"
The department is pleased to offer M.A. and Ph.D. candidates a diversity of intellectual , pedagogic, and community opportunities as well as those resources and facilities necessary to take advantage of such opportunities. We believe that our degree programs strike a crucial balance by combining a generalist vision with a flexible accommodation of individual interests.
Student Groups
Students in the department of English at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are active in a number of English-specific organizations. Students in Sigma Tau Delta, for instance, the ULL branch of the national honors society hold English day, an event designed to reach out to students across the campus. The folklore and rhetoric reading groups meet three to four times a semester to discuss material relevant to their concentrations. The Milena Club is an impromptu group interested in experimental theater.
