Lessons in Aging and Agriculture

we all must learn to love
          the droughts in our lungs

because it’s all black anyway
in the back of a thunderstorm

meaning: stay awake & tend to
          small children & animals

sow your seeds in any weather
          heat waves and earthquakes

run when you see neighbors
          bury their heads in tornadoes

stare down the black crows
glower at life’s dryness and be ready

when rain joyfully makes new oceans
wrap yourself in the wet earth

breathe in deeply when the mist
          comes rushing in with grace
